Smaller Learning Communities (SLCs)

Friends of Reed (FoR)

Friends of Reed is the parent umbrella organization that includes all other FoR SLC groups (aside from FIHP, which was created prior to FoR). FoR functions as an organizational hub for fundraising among all SLCs. Our general annual fund efforts to go provide support for school-wide programs and events.

Environmental Sciences Academy (ESA)

Our motto is “Act Locally, Think Globally!” The Environmental Science Academy is designed for students who have a strong interest in science and want to actively participate in the preservation of our planet.

Global Leadership Academy

GLA is for students who have a desire to explore global issues, perform community service, as well as learn and demonstrate leadership skills.


The Humanities Academy is designed for the student who is creative, curious, and thinks outside of the box.

Media Arts & Technology (MAT)

The MAT Academy fosters our innate desire to express ourselves creatively while developing an original perspective on the world.

Science Technology Engineering Arts and Mathematics (STEAM)

This SLC is designed for students seeking problem-based learning activities in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics (STEAM).

Friends of Reed Music

Walter Reed Middle School offers a comprehensive three year music program that has been in place since the 1930’s.

Individualized Honors Program (IHP)

The IHP is the oldest continuous program for Highly Gifted students in LAUSD (founded 1970). This SLC is designed for the unique needs of Highly Gifted students and offers challenges not generally offered in an honors level middle school course of study.

FIHP is a separate non-profit organization working collaboratively with FoR.
